Biden Advances Plan to Make Freight Shipping Carbon-Free Transport Topics

Nearly 75% of all freight movements are made by truck to and from the ocean ports. The Port of Los Angeles or LA sees high volumes of imports and exports, and has major trading partners like China, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan and Taiwan. Consumer goods like furniture, clothing and apparel, and electronics are the items mainly imported to the U.S. through Los Angeles. The federal government will take aim at one obstacle — disparate charging infrastructure — and plans to ask the public to weigh in on minimum standards for the megawatt charging equipment needed to power heavy-duty vehicles. FirstElement, through its True Zero brand fueling stations, is the largest hydrogen vehicle fuel distributor in the U.S. Miyasato spoke Tuesday at a ceremony to mark the station’s opening, attended by state officials including Liane Randolph, chair of the California Air Resources Board; and Tyson Eckerle, clean transportation advisor for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s business development office, Go-Biz.

Separately, the Environmental Protection Agency is opening applications for some $1 billion in Inflation Reduction Act funding to help cities, states and tribes replace school buses, trash trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles with zero-emission models. The money is meant to provide necessary fueling infrastructure and workforce training to enable the transition, with nearly half of the benefits going to communities dealing with significant air pollution. For the first time, the White House will explicitly establish a national goal for a zero-emissions freight sector.

LUPTON, Ariz. (AP) — A freight train carrying fuel derailed and caught fire Friday near the Arizona-New Mexico state line, forcing the closure of an interstate highway that serves as a key trucking route. The White House also is committing to developing a national zero-emission freight strategy that brings together action from across the federal government. Eckerle said the hub funding will allow construction of 60 more hydrogen truck stations in California, enough to serve 5,000 trucks and 1,000 buses. The study, sponsored by the freight truck industry, adds to concerns over government mandates. But government officials say the move away from fossil fuels will have economic benefits. The industry is working on production alternatives, including carbon capture and storage from the burning of methane, or quitting methane altogether to make green hydrogen, using an electrolyzer to split water’s hydrogen and oxygen. Both alternatives are prohibitively expensive without government subsidies. Los Angeles freight shipping – in trend with other major metros – is performed mainly via truck and rail, but the ports contribute to the volume of freight moving in and out of California.

As part of the election-year rollout, the Biden Administration plans to ask the public to comment on charging infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles, signaling that the specifics of the plan aren’t yet finalized. The White House wants to avoid a fragmented industrial EV charging system without a universally agreed-upon standard. The industry has seemingly settled on Tesla’s NACS as the de facto choice in the lightweight consumer sector. The Biden administration is tackling the monumental task of making America’s industrial freight system more environmentally friendly.

The Arizona Corporation Commission that oversees railroad safety said in a social media post on X that 10 rail cars were involved in the derailment and that two were transporting liquid petroleum. The agency said it planned to send a railroad inspector to the site but later learned the derailment happened on the New Mexico side of the tracks. Nearby residences and a truck stop were evacuated as a precaution as winds carried away thick smoke and local firefighting crews responded. The derailment also led Amtrak to cancel some passenger travel, including on the route between Los Angeles and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Today’s announcements build on the Administration’s ongoing work across federal agencies to tackle emissions from America’s freight system. "We're thankful to be alive. We're very thankful," said Jason Sunday.

The White House says 72 million Americans live near truck freight routes and bear the brunt of their short-term output. Sadly but unsurprisingly (given the nation’s history), people of color and those from low-income households are most likely to be heavily affected by high environmental toxin levels. Disparities in ambient air quality have widened over the last decade even as air pollution levels have fallen, and the burden of persistent levels of elevated air pollution remains more heavily borne by communities of color and low-income families.

Though it doesn’t come with an express timetable, the ambition is undergirded by other milestones, including a target for 30% of medium- and heavy-duty truck sales to be zero-emission models in 2030. The multipronged initiative takes aim at a major source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions — as well as a thorny challenge for companies trying to meet sustainability targets and cut carbon across their own supply chains. The transportation sector generates about 29% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and the shipment of freight — whether on ships, trucks or rail — is responsible for about a third of that.

While 120 million Americans live in places with unhealthy air quality, a higher percentage of the exposed population are people of color, who experience nearly eight times higher rates of pediatric asthma and 1.3 times higher risk of dying prematurely from exposure to pollutants. High levels of air pollution are often found in neighborhoods ringed by factories or next to highways, despite most sources meeting emission standards. To kick off the initiative, the White House is convening a roundtable April 24 with leaders from across the freight sector — from commercial truck fleet managers and port directors to utility executives and local government officials. The gathering will focus on ways to begin “supercharging the buildout of the infrastructure necessary to make a zero-emissions freight ecosystem a reality in the United States,” according to a White House fact sheet.

While a fuel cell is comparable in size to a diesel engine, a battery big enough for long-haul trucks adds weight and size and cuts down on the total freight load the truck can deliver. And while an battery electric truck can take hours to recharge, the refill time for hydrogen is more comparable to filling up with diesel fuel. The IRA requires that at least $400 million of that funding goes to local communities hit the hardest by industrial pollution.

Building on this momentum, the Biden-Harris Administration is today announcing a first-ever national goal to transition to a zero-emissions freight sector for truck, rail, aviation and marine, along with a commitment to develop a national zero-emissions freight strategy. This whole-of-government strategy includes new federal investments announced today, continued engagement with stakeholders on zero-emissions freight infrastructure, and forthcoming action plans on each of the freight segments. The strategy will prioritize actions to address air pollution hot spots and tackle the climate crisis, mobilizing a broad range of government resources, and reflect public participation and meaningful community engagement, furthering the President’s commitment to environmental justice for all. This new commitment to zero-emissions freight aligns with and supports President Biden’s existing goals for a carbon pollution-free energy sector by 2035 and for achieving net-zero emissions from the transportation sector by 2050.

Mass production aided home builders in adding architectural details like intricate metalwork and decorative woodwork throughout homes. While the Victorian home style originated in England, it quickly made its way to many other countries, including the US. From the moment you see a Victorian house, it stands out from the rest with its gingerbread-house-like look and colorful paint. Victorian houses are full of history as most have been around for over a century, so you’ll be living in a home shared by many others before you. As with the exterior, the interior of a Victorian house is equally as ornate and decorated.

How to find Victorian houses for sale in your area

Queen Anne Victorian homes are the most famous Victorian style architecture that comes to mind. Often more asymmetrical in design, Queen Anne style homes feature wrap-around porches, balconies, towers, bay windows, pitched roofs, highly ornate trim, and brightly painted exteriors. Stick-Eastlake homes, also just called Stick, share a resemblance to Tudor-style homes with their diagonal, horizontal, or vertical planks (called “stick work”) adorning the home’s exterior. Typically made with wood, Stick-Eastlake Victorian homes are also characterized by their pitched gable roofs, trusses, towers, and embellished trim. Unlike other Victorian style homes, Stick-Eastlake style may not have bay windows and as much intricate decoration.

Timeless Fusion: How to Blend Vintage and Modern Design According to Experts

Similar to Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival Victorian homes take inspiration from European churches with their arches and turrets. Romanesque Revival style often features a brick exterior, intricate stone detailing, and a reddish color. Unlike many other types of Victorian architecture styles, Romanesque Revival homes don’t have that characteristic wood trim. Victorian homes have a staple look – ornate exteriors, reminiscent of a castle with large windows.

From Alamo Square’s “Painted Ladies,” to Pacific Heights and Bernal Heights, you can find Victorian homes in just about every neighborhood in San Francisco. Whether you’re looking to buy your first home or are fascinated by the popular house styles across the US, a Victorian home should be on your list of must-sees. Find out what makes this style unique and the history that has let these homes stand the test of time.

You’ll often find crown molding, window and door trim, and intricate staircases. Victorian homes are more formal, so there may be many “parlors” or living rooms, and typically feature a formal dining room. There may also be hidden nooks, balconies, and high ceilings, adding to the grandeur of a Victorian era home.

Italianate style Victorian homes mirror the Italian villas they are modeled after. Typically only two stories, these homes also feature single-story porches, wide eaves, low roofs, and the characteristic ornamental brackets. If you’ve decided that a Victorian home is right for you, you may also be wondering how to highlight these homes’ unique features.

Pros of Victorian style homes

They often have low-pitched roofs, a domed shape, a cupola, and a spiral staircase in the middle of the home. Alison is part of the content marketing team and enjoys writing about housing affordability and home interior design ideas. Her dream home is a cottage-style house with a chef’s kitchen and a cozy room to store and play vinyl records. Originating in France, Second Empire Victorian homes are known for their Mansard roofs.

Yet different architectural styles have influenced the look of Victorian homes, resulting in unique spins on the standard design. Gothic Revival style homes take inspiration from medieval European churches with their steeply pitched roofs and pointed arches. You can also find ornate woodworking details, turrets, and decorative columns or posts. Picture a dollhouse – a colorful exterior, several stories high, gabled roof, highly decorative details, maybe even a tower – and you’ve just envisioned a Victorian style home. From their iconic exteriors, to their opulent interiors fit for a queen, Victorian houses are a unique home style that stands out from the rest. While Victorian houses have many different architectural styles, there are common features you can find among them.

These interior and exterior features help tie Victorian era homes together, making them easily identifiable from other home styles. Victorian houses became popular from 1837 to 1901, coinciding with the Industrial Revolution. As new building materials became widely available, builders were able to take a different approach to home design.

The most common type of Victorian style, the Folk Victorian house, is more simplistic in design. Characterized by their square look, classically detailed trims, gable roof, and front porch, Folk Victorian homes exude the spirit of the Victorian style without the grandeur. Appropriately named, the Octagon style home has eight sides, making homes feel airy and full of light.

Queen Anne homes, along with Italianate homes, are widely seen in San Francisco—a result of it being a “boom town” during this time period. The city’s most famous are undoubtedly the “Painted Ladies,” a block of Queen Anne-style townhouses painted three or more colors (you know them from the opening credits of Full House). By far, the city with the most well-known Victorian style homes is San Francisco, CA.

Primary funding for the Oakland station is provided by state money channeled through the Air Resources Board and the California Energy Commission. The transportation sector is also the largest source of climate pollution in the U.S., with trucks and buses comprising nearly a quarter of emissions from the sector. That’s why President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is supporting solutions that address harmful pollution, and has spurred $165 billion of private sector investments in zero-emission vehicle technologies. The funding will support infrastructure to charge, fuel and maintain heavy-duty zero emission vehicles along with workforce development and training to get this work done. Under the requirements of the Inflation Reduction Act, at least $400 million of the program’s funding will serve communities dealing with significant air pollution. Projects supported through this program will reduce air and noise pollution, improve public health, and create good-paying clean energy jobs.

The White House said on Wednesday that it aims to have 30 percent of industrial truck sales produce zero emissions by 2030 and 100 percent by 2040. President Biden and Vice President Harris believe that every person has a right to breathe clean air and live in a healthy community – now and into the future. That is why, during his first week in office, President Biden signed Executive Order 14008, launching the most ambitious environmental justice agenda in our Nation’s history. To continue delivering on that vision, last year President Biden signed Executive Order focused on ensuring environmental justice for all people, further embedding environmental justice into the work of federal agencies to achieve real, measurable progress that communities can count on. They argue that paring pollution from freight transportation will deliver cleaner air, less noise and health benefits for people who live near logistics centers, highways and ports — and now bear the brunt of their pollution. Most hydrogen produced today requires methane, which is a fossil fuel and a strong greenhouse gas contributor.

Today’s convening on zero-emissions freight infrastructure is designed to launch a series of engagements aimed at tackling emissions from the movement of goods across the nation and recognizes the great progress made already by leaders in freight decarbonization. Unsurprisingly, the freight industry uses a lot of energy and produces a lot of pollution to match. Bloomberg notes that the transportation sector emits about 29 percent of US greenhouse gas emissions, and freight (including shipping, trucking and trains) makes up about a third of that figure. So, you can ballpark that the American freight industry is responsible for roughly 10 percent of the country’s carbon emissions.

freight house

The industry’s massive scale and energy needs also make it particularly difficult to decarbonize — a challenge that demands a broad and government-wide approach, said White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi. OAKLAND — The first commercial hydrogen fuel station for big-rig trucks in the U.S. is up and running at the Port of Oakland, a baby step toward what hydrogen proponents see as a clean new future for long-haul trucking. Much of the new administration initiatives are voluntary and could be easily undone by a future administration. Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee, has scoffed at other Biden climate policies and vowed to undo policies compelling electric vehicle sales. Omega CHB is nationally licensed to clear freight at all airports and ocean ports with the United States.

It also aligns with the Administration’s commitment to work with other countries to identify pathways and implementation actions that enable zero-emissions medium- and heavy-duty vehicles to reach 30 percent of new sales in 2030 and 100 percent of new sales by 2040. Such engagement will ensure the federal government’s actions to reduce emissions are better targeted, more effective, and reflect the priorities of community groups that have frontline experience with air pollution from the freight sector. Trucks, ships, trains, and planes move 55 million tons of goods worth more than $49 billion every day, across a vast network that is essential to how Americans live and work.

The Biden administration is laying out more of its vision for decarbonizing the nation’s freight industry, including plans for standardizing charging infrastructure for electric trucks and accelerating the adoption of emission-free big rigs. Both battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell trucks can cost three times as much or more than a $120,000 diesel truck. Those buying the trucks can qualify for state and federal subsidies to make up most of the upfront costs. Battery electric is gaining a strong foothold in the medium-sized delivery truck market, but hydrogen could have a leg up for long-haul trucking.

Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches John W Creswell, J. David Creswell

research design and methods

Your research design choices should be driven by your aims and priorities – start by thinking carefully about what you want to achieve. Capture snapshots of reality with Cross-Sectional Studies, unraveling intricate relationships and disparities between variables in a single moment. Embark on longitudinal journeys with Longitudinal Studies, tracking evolving trends and patterns over time.

research design and methods

A qualitative research method that aims to develop theories or explanations grounded in the data collected during the research process. Combines qualitative and quantitative research methods to provide a more holistic understanding of a research problem. The first year is graded as pass/fail (with extensive feedback), providing a supportive learning environment that supports exploration, experimentation, taking risks and making mistakes as a core component of design practice.

Action Research Design

With this raw data, you can do your own analysis to answer new research questions that weren’t addressed by the original study. Even with a narrowly defined population, it’s rarely possible to collect data from every individual. A population can be made up of anything you want to study – plants, animals, organisations, texts, countries, etc. In research, a population is the entire group that you want to draw conclusions about, while a sample is the smaller group of individuals you’ll actually collect data from. Your research design should clearly define who or what your research will focus on, and how you’ll go about choosing your participants or subjects.

Step 1: Consider your aims and approach

research design and methods

The module develops students’ understanding of reverse engineering, mass manufacture design requirements and related design optimisation techniques. The focus of the module is on developing both an intellectual awareness and a practical application of design process methods, ideas generation and communication techniques and creative conversations. As well as studio-based design skills, you will gain extensive expertise in 3D CAD, physical prototyping and design for manufacture. We will help you to understand the wider context that surrounds our subject, developing the theoretical and practical skills, experiences and attitudes needed to enter the profession, across a wide range of sectors and emerging practices. Most of our U.S. surveys are conducted on the American Trends Panel (ATP), Pew Research Center’s national survey panel of over 10,000 randomly selected U.S. adults.

Doing so allows you to observe the effect of the former on the latter and draw conclusions about potential causality. For example, if you wanted to explore the relationship between exercise frequency and overall health, you could use a correlational design to help you achieve this. In this case, you might gather data on participants’ exercise habits, as well as records of their health indicators like blood pressure, heart rate, or body mass index. Thereafter, you’d use a statistical test to assess whether there’s a relationship between the two variables (exercise frequency and health). There are many other ways of analysing qualitative data depending on the aims of your research. To get a sense of potential approaches, try reading some qualitative research papers in your field.

It involves collecting data at multiple time points and analyzing the changes that occur. The aim of longitudinal research is to provide insights into the development, growth, or decline of a particular phenomenon over time. Case study research design is used to investigate a single case or a small number of cases in depth.

Qualitative interviews will be conducted with Medicaid managed care administrators and obstetric and pediatric providers, and focus groups will be conducted among Medicaid beneficiaries. Quantitative data on healthcare utilization, healthcare quality, and health outcomes among pregnant and parenting people will be extracted from administrative Medicaid healthcare data. Primary outcomes are stakeholder perspectives on policy intervention implementation (qualitative) and timely prenatal care, pregnancy and birth outcomes, and well-child visits (quantitative). Quantitative analyses will use an interrupted time series design to examine changes over time in outcomes among Black people, relative to people of other races, before and after adoption of the Pennsylvania Medicaid equity-focused policy interventions.

There are no inferences obtained and therefore cannot be generalized to the population which is a limitation. Most often than not, a series of case reports make a case series which is an atypical presentation found in a group of patients. This in turn poses the question for a new disease entity and further queries the investigator to look into mechanistic investigative opportunities to further explore.

Data is collected primarily via observational techniques, formal and informal interaction with participants in that culture, and personal field notes, while data analysis involves ‘sense-making’. The researcher must narrate her experience in great detail so that readers may experience that same culture without necessarily being there. The advantages of this approach are its sensitiveness to the context, the rich and nuanced understanding it generates, and minimal respondent bias.

The Humanities Research Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has awarded its annual Summer Faculty Fellowships to ten faculty members for 2024. These fellowships are designed to help faculty maximize the summer in service of their ongoing professional development. They provide an infusion of resources to jump start or fuel an ongoing research project, undertake course development, or pursue a professional training opportunity over the summer months.

You will graduate from the programme with a portfolio of work that demonstrates your own creativity, process and skillset, culminating in a final-year project tailored to the pathway you want to take into the profession. You will have the opportunity to showcase yourself as a designer through our final-year exhibitions. Through project-based practice, we will support you with the experience, advice, feedback and encouragement you need to grow as a product designer. Develop the confidence, knowledge, skills and experience to launch a successful career across the product design sector.

This also ensures comparability between groups as most baseline characteristics are similar prior to randomization and therefore helps to interpret the results regarding the intervention/experiment group without bias. In clinical research, our aim is to design a study which would be able to derive a valid and meaningful scientific conclusion using appropriate statistical methods. The conclusions derived from a research study can either improve health care or result in inadvertent harm to patients.

75 Beautiful Living Room Ideas & Designs April 2024

“Places like West Elm offer a variety of furniture pieces upholstered in this soft and loopy fabric,” she says. Rearranging the furniture in your living room is fairly easily, as long as you’ve got a strong and patient helper. Frank Ponterio of Frank Ponterio Interiors in Chicago says the goal is to create a central gathering area as well as at least one intimate area. Pull armchairs from the smaller grouping for additional seating, Ponterio adds. Dawson recommends two similar-size sofas directly facing each other or an L- or U-shaped sectional with a coffee table in the middle and club chairs right across the way to create a conversation zone. Accent pieces such as floor lamps, sconces, and window treatments are other living room features that shouldn’t be an afterthought.

Midcentury Modern Romance

Ponterio’s approach to accessorizing is similar, sticking with a few choice items that reflect your interests. “Think in pairs,” says Peter Dunham, the Los Angeles-based interior designer. “Pairs of chairs and poufs give a sense of symmetry and completeness. Pairs make the singular items, like this curvy sofa, stand out.” It makes the room look twice as nice.

Choose Smart Lighting

You’ve heard us say this before – never underestimate the power of changing your cushions and throws. These small changes can make a huge difference to the look of your living room. A new print – we like the polka – a bold color or simply a new texture can instantly update your sofa and chairs. Ease every renter's commitment phobias with the best peel-and-stick wallpapers and add some neon lighting for a modern party house vibe. We love this green living room, it's such a cool, unusual color that looks fab with the pops of blue and orange. For a similar look, try Benjamin Moore's Dartsmouth Green – a timeless and elegant shade that will nurture your space in green serene.

Go for a Gallery Wall

The piece in the living room pictured is minimal in pattern and color, but still puches up the room thanks to its size. If you love pink but still want your space to feel sophisticated, opt for a pale blush. If you're thinking of going monochrome, but you're not sure you want to commit to one shade, try a tone-on-tone look. In this living room designed by Whittney Parkinson Design, various shades of cream and taupe are blended for a calming and inviting look. This living room by Yael Weiss Interiors is worthy of a museum. The designer played with striking pieces, evoking high art and sculpture.

Modern rustic

Proof that versatile grey doesn't have to be boring, this living room has been carefully curated with ornaments, a flamingo print artwork, and books. It's all in the details though, and the tiled fireplace, combined with the layered textures (upholstered armchair, log basket, patterned cushion and jute rug) add plenty of character. Here's a lovely nature-inspired living room update in time for spring. Bright and breezy yet calm and nurturing, a crisp sage green is the perfect companion to fuchsia and warm oak woods, alongside natural textures like jute. A leaning ladder shelf is a great way to display trailing plants.

Though this living room is neutral, adding a statement chair makes a major statement. This one adds both height and texture to the space (and needless to say plenty of boho vibes). White walls are never going out of style, but sometimes they can feel a little sterile.

Paint tricks, furniture layout and decorative accessories can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your room. To give you some inspiration, we've compiled 50 gorgeous living room ideas to use as a starting point for your next decorating project. There are scads of publications loaded with living room decorating ideas, but unless you have the budget to purchase living room furniture by the set, it would be best to start small. When picking furniture, take into consideration what purpose it will serve then focus on a few staple items. Find a comfy couch and an inviting coffee table that suits your needs then search for accent furniture that will bring out your vision of home.

Build in a window seat

This living room mixes marble and brick, which adds a rustic touch to an otherwise glam fireplace. Though the two materials might seem as though they wouldn't work together, mixing materials can help tone down a room and make it feel more accessible and homey. It doesn't have to be all or nothing—you can opt for a traditional aesthetic but still bring in tons of personality. This living room incorporates classic silhouettes and styles but punches it up with color, pattern, and bold art. Cozy up your space and vary your seating by adding in a rocker.

Stephanie Watkins of Casa Watkins Living chose a stunning green velvet sectional to anchor her space. Consider high-performance fabrics if your living room will be frequented by pets, kids, or lots of guests. "This one was a funky layout which was a fun challenge for me, but I pulled it all together by overlapping the rugs," Sarah explains.

But to everyone else, the word “modern” is simply a shorthand for interiors that feel fresh, inviting, and livable in the here and now. Whether you're a surfer or a musician, you can incorporate your favorite hobby in your living room. This string instrument propped up in the corner not only gives you easy access when you're ready to play, but it also serves as dĂ©cor (and brings your personality into the space!). This pastel dream of a living room incorporates rattan bowls/plates as well as live plants. These colors shouldn't work together, but the bold use of pink and red in small doses creates a fun vibe to this otherwise minimalistic space.

As you browse, you'll find plenty of advice pertaining to living room paint colors (we're loving green living rooms, but you can't go wrong with timeless white living rooms). You may decide to experiment with a trendy wallpaper, invest in a comfortable sofa, hang fresh curtains or arrange a gallery wall — which are clever, renter-friendly design ideas. You can also upgrade your space with architectural features like wood wall slats, upgraded light fixtures or a fireplace mantel makeover. So, if you're hunting for a simple solution or considering a full renovation, this stylish roundup is sure to inspire your next home project. Contemporary living room décor resists the minutiae of ornamentation and instead puts the focus on space, shape, and color.

The best paint colors for the living room will of course depend on your style and the look you want to create. But there are a few general rules if you are struggling to decide on a color scheme. Second only to paint, we think wallpaper is one of the easiest living room ideas out there.

With a vintage sofa by Mario Bellini beside a wonderfully blobby cocktail table by Mike Ruiz Serra, we’d wager even Gehry himself would feel right at home here. For Parisian architect and interior designer Hugo Toro, a tastefully curated home environment is everything, and this pied-Ă -terre in the Saint-Germain-des-PrĂ©s district is no exception. We especially love the green-as-green Cassina chaise longue, which is begging for a sleepy resident to take up some space on it.

Upon the right and left of the balcony, a lion and unicorn—royal symbols of the King of Great Britain—graced the main façade facing the public square. From this balcony, Bostonians listened to royal proclamations, but here they also heard for the first time the Declaration of Independence, which announced the birth of a new nation. The state government continued to use Old State House until 1798 when they moved to the New State House on Beacon Hill (where the Massachusetts government still meets to this day).

Through Massacre, Revolution, and fire, the Old State House stands as the oldest surviving public building in Boston. Built in 1713, the building served as the center of civic, political, and business life. But perhaps they would also have been pleased to know that eventually we came together again as free peoples and friends to defend together the very ideals for which the American Revolution was fought. The iconic lion and unicorn statues atop the east parapets of the Old State House are repaired. The Declaration of Independence is read by Colonel Thomas Crafts for the first time in Boston from the balcony of the Old State House. The brick Town House is built in 1713, replacing the previous wooden Town House, which had burned in a fire in 1711.

Built in 1713, this historic landmark served as the seat of colonial and state governments as well as a merchants’ exchange. After 1798 and the completion of the current Massachusetts State House, the Old State House housed commercial space and offices, at one point housed City Hall, and today a museum to Boston's history. The second floor served as the seat of colonial and later state government throughout the 1700s. The royal governor, appointed by the King of Great Britain, held his office in the building until 1775, and from the balcony he gave voice to the King 3,000 miles removed from London. The governor's stature as surrogate for the crown was underscored by his elevated position upon the balcony which overlooked King Street.

Revolutionary Character

The writs permit customs officials to search for contraband goods without probable cause. Otis makes a four-hour speech in the Council Chamber of the Town House, defending the rights of citizens. The interior of the Town House is rebuilt and the iconic lion and unicorn statues are installed. In 1761, in part of what is known as Paxton’s Case, the Old State House was the scene of James Otis Junior’s famous speech against Writs of Assistance, British warrants which conferred wide search powers on their beneficiaries. Otis’s speech failed to extinguish these writs, but did add to the increasing dissatisfaction which eventually led to the American Revolution.

It remains an important symbol of Boston’s colonial history and is a stop on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5 mile trail which connects multiple Revolutionary War sites in Boston together. While the building was saved, the area around the State House was quickly built up. Today the Old State House, once the most prominent building in the area, is dwarfed by numerous skyscrapers and modern buildings and surrounded by busy streets. In 1904, a subway station was placed in the basement of the building, and it continues to be used by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (popularly known as “the T”) to this very day. During this time, the spiral staircase is removed and the interior remodeled several times, while the exterior becomes covered in advertisements and signs.

The Old State House was originally completed in 1713 and served the multiple functions of being a merchant’s hall and the seat of the colonial government. However, a fire in 1747 meant that it had to be rebuilt to a great extent in 1748 and further restoration and changes were made to the Old State House in 1830. In the cacophony of taunts, screams, and church bells ringing, one of the soldiers was struck. Most of the other soldiers opened fired in response, thinking an order had been given. The captain never gave an order, but as the balls flew through the street, men fell dead and wounded. The first bloodshed of the Revolution fell on to the ice and snow in front of the Old State House.

The Old State House in Boston played an important role in the American Revolution and is now one of the sites included in the Freedom Trail, a tourist trail made up of sixteen sites relating to the American Revolution against the British. After the American Revolution, the building served as the seat of the Massachusetts state government until 1798, when it moved to the Massachusetts State House.

Don't forget to sit in the Royal Governor's chair inside the newly restored King's Council Chamber and experience what it was like to be the most powerful person in Colonial America. Both Otis and Adams, as well as Adams' cousin Samuel and merchant John Hancock, served as representatives in the Massachusetts provincial legislature. Samuel Adams and James Otis proved to be among some of the most notorious members, arguing for measures which increasingly created friction with the royal governor and his supporters. Dive into the history of the events that took place within and outside this building's wall by visiting the Old State House, stewarded by Revolutionary Spaces. The next stop on Freedom Trail is the site of the Boston Massacre, located on a busy street in front of the museum and commemorated by a cobblestone ring on the plaza in front of the Old State House. The museum offers an array of programming and exhibitions, some tied to the Boston Massacre.

Experience Revolutionary Boston at the Old State House Museum and Boston Massacre Historic Site. Historically, the Old State House was the political, economic, and geographic center of the Massachusetts Bay colony since it was built in 1713, though a structure devoted to government has stood on its site since the mid 17th century. Because of the very ideals of self-government first expressed within the building, The Old State House has played host to the most influential minds that helped shaped the world as we know it today. On a cold March night in 1770, a beleaguered squadron of British soldiers opened fire in the square in front of this royal building, killing five individuals and wounding many others. By the next morning, leaders called the event a "bloody massacre." Six years later, shots were heard again in the square.

The incident began with local boys taunting a British sentry on a cold March night. Mobs of laborers, sailors, and others of "the lower sort" joined into the confrontation. A detachment of seven soldiers under command of a Captain eventually emerged on the scene to rescue the beleaguered sentry. When they crossed the square to reach him, the crowd formed around them and the captain had the men draw into a small perimeter, muskets loaded. The Old State House is today a popular tourist destination and still operated as a museum by a group called Revolutionary Spaces.

Then when I secured them to some key rings I had on hand, I knew I had come up with a clever, inexpensive, and handmade gift option for everyone on our holiday list. I was honestly quite surprised how quick and easy these DIY bead keychains were to make. Once you have your supplies assembled and some patterns figured out, stringing them together and knotting them off takes mere minutes. You can get creative and make variations of the keychain design to suit your preferences. Try experimenting with different bead colors, sizes, and shapes, as well as different types of charms or pendants. You can also try different patterns or arrangements of beads and butterflies to create a unique design that reflects your personal style.

Once the bead is in place, close the split ring back up.Another option is to use a jump ring. This is similar to using a split ring, but instead of opening up the jump ring, you will need to twist it open. Again, slide on the bead and then close the jump ring back up. To do this, thread your beads onto an eye pin and then make a loop at the top with your needle nose pliers.

I am not able to save any of the patterns. I have registered, but came back to log in and told me I could not do so. I said to send password to email, it said it did and it did not. So, unhappily, I am having to go through each pattern, look and decide if I want to save it. URGH...not a lot of fun doing it this way.

This keychain is made with colored beads wrapped with wire around a cross made with nails. You can fix a jump ring at the top to make it act as a keychain. I was hoping for some intermediate and advanced seed bead patterns. Beading patterns for anklets are perfect for summer and make great gifts for adults and little girls. Wear one with a pair of flip-flops and shorts when you hit the beach. Learn how to make jewelry that you can wear with a fancy dress or a casual swimsuit - anklets look good no matter what.

As long as kids are adequately supervised, there's no need to worry! Get creative and spend the afternoon creating cool crafts. For this particular DIY beaded keychain project, I used metallic separator beads.

Go through the various DIYs and Tutorials with detailed step-by-step instructions showing you how to make beaded keychains. There are a few different types of string that can be used for silicone bead keychains, but the most common and popular type is clear elastic beading cord. This cord is strong and stretchy, making it perfect for holding together a large number of beads without breaking. There are a few different ways that you can attach a bead to a keychain.

This one probably would have lasted a lot longer if I had used cords or leather, but I love white and I love organza so that was my choice. I also used a keychain clasp because I love to switch keychains so I can play around. Send me exclusive offers, unique gift ideas, and personalized tips for shopping and selling on Etsy. Though the above-linked article guides you in making a Hama bead owl, you can use the same technique in creating a beaded rainbow keychain.

The Bostonian Society was formed in 1881 to preserve and steward the Old State House, in response to plans for the possible demolition of the building due to real estate potential. The entrance to the Old State House is located on the south side of the building, facing the pedestrian walkway, just a few steps off the red brick line of The Freedom Trail. Journey through this Freedom Trail museum filled with a vivid collection of Revolution-era artifacts and other one-of-a-kind objects from the past, each one contributing to the amazing story of Revolutionary Boston. Highlights include John Hancock's lavish red velvet coat, arms and ammunition from Revolutionary War battles, and tea salvaged from the Boston Tea Party.

The second floor housed the Royal Governor’s Council Chamber, Representatives’ Hall, and the Supreme Judicial Court. The assembly that met in Representatives’ Hall was one of the most democratic bodies in the colonial world, and featured the first public gallery in the Western world, where citizens could observe the government in action. Constructed in 1713, the Old State House (known as the “Town House” until the Revolution) was the center of royal government in Massachusetts Bay Colony and the focal point for many of the Revolution’s most dramatic events. The Boston Massacre unfolded in its shadow on March 5, 1770, and eyewitness accounts were collected inside in the subsequent days. The Declaration of Independence was read for the first time in Boston from the balcony of the Old State House on July 18, 1776.

Revolutionary Characters

The Boston Antiquarian Club reorganizes as the Bostonian Society and creates a museum of Boston’s history inside the Old State House. Recreations of the former lion and unicorn statues are reinstalled on the building. The Old State House was also part of the Boston Massacre of 1770, as attested to by a plaque beneath its balcony which indicates that this was the location where British soldiers fired into a group of Bostonians. This balcony was the scene of happier times on 18 July 1776, when Colonel Thomas Crafts read out the Declaration of Independence to the public for the first time. A cobblestone circle beneath the Old State House balcony marks the site of the 1770 Boston Massacre.

On July 18, 1776, Bostonians gathered under the balcony of Old State to hear for the first time the Declaration of Independence. It is one of the landmarks on Boston's Freedom Trail and is the oldest surviving public building in Boston. It now serves as a history museum that was operated by the Bostonian Society through 2019. After the American army gained control of Boston from the British in March of 1776, the Old State House became the seat of government for the new state of Massachusetts.

In July of 1776, the Declaration of Independence was reading to the city from the second story balcony. A lion and unicorn (symbols of Royal authority) that graced the edifice of the building were torn down and burned by the patriots. Operated by Revolutionary Spaces, Old State House served as the seat of colonial and state governments of Massachusetts. Visitors can learn more about early colonial and revolutionary history and enter rooms where history happened.

As important as what occurred inside the State House was what happened just outside its doors. It was in front of the Old State House where the Boston Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770. Today a small ring of stones sits close to the location where eight British soldiers opened fire into a mob of colonists, killing five and wounding six. The event was important in garnering public support against British soldiers stationed in Boston. Following the event, patriot Paul Revere made an engraving a famous engraving of the event and situated prominently in the background of the image was the Old State House.

Especially if you’re a family of doers like mine is, since there’s so much to do on the water — and in the mountains near Lake Winnipesaukee– in the summer months. Annually, we fill our week’s vacation with tons of activity close to the waterfront towns of Laconia, Meredith, and Gilford, where our home base has always been. It’s a 9,000-seat amphitheater that sits on Lake Winnipesaukee that began as a grass field and evolved into one of the best summer concert venues in New Hampshire. It even made USA Today‘s top summer venues in the U.S. list. My suggestions below focus on things to see and do — with and without kids — on the west side of Lake Winnipesaukee, since I know it best. But I’ve got a couple of suggestions at the end of this article in case you’re staying in one of the other scenic areas of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire (or you’re in the mood to explore). Please provide your verification details which will be used for claim procedure.

Looking for the top things to do during your Lakes Region vacation getaway, with options for every age and interest. There's so much to experience at each stop, and once you've discovered the magical pull of New Hampshire's Lakes.... Because there is limited storage on board, strollers are not permitted. However, we are able to store strollers on shore until you return from your cruise. The islands are private communities, and therefore passengers will not be able to disembark the vessel. All passengers 5 years or age or older are required to have a ticket.

Please note that only a limited number of seats are available for advance purchase at cruisenh.com. Additional seats may be available for purchase in person on the day of a cruise. Unfortunately we are unable to hold or reserve any tickets in advance of arrival. Celebrate the end of the day in spectacular fashion by experiencing the golden hour on the lake. Watch from a pontoon boat as the setting sun lights up the horizon and surroundings in a palette of vibrant colors and let the sounds of the lake entice you into evening calm.

No visit to Weirs Beach would be complete without an excursion out onto Lake Winnipesaukee. From Weirs Beach, even with its vast view, you are only seeing a small part of a huge Lake. There are dinner, dance, sunset, family, foliage and fireworks cruises, so there’s really no excuse for not getting out onto the lake. On some islands Sophie's visit is the social event of the day, and island residents often come to the dock to say hello, and purchase an ice cream treat, snack or souvenir. For a more tranquil boat experience, we sometimes visit the New Hampshire Boat Museum.

Many Lake Winnipesaukee boat rental shops also offer personal watercrafts (jet skis), as well as canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, water skis, wakeboards, and inflatable tubes for loads of fun on the water. A morning cruise is the perfect way to experience the beauty of Winnipesaukee. During this leisurely excursion, select from a variety of brunch entrées, while you listen to the history and folklore of the region. Many other Weirs Beach boat tour services have come and gone over the years.
